Go to the Songbirdnest

Songbird Screenshot I am now using Songbird for some month to play my music. And wanted to use my blog to maybe add some more people to the user base! Try it out! They are still working on a bug in Mozilla Firefox getting fixed to move on…

Firefox is the base for Songbird and extending it to a music player. And it is open source, too!!

Some call it the iTunes killer… Can you say that with Songbird being version 0.1.1? Let me know!

A recent article on MarketingVOX shows that traditional TV really has to think about marketing revenues. DVR are used to skip the commercials. Find the full article here.

We will see if the Ad-Supported Internet-Channels of CBS (launched today) and Upfront will help to boost revenues again…

VoIP Testrun

For some days now I very intensely tested different VoIP Programs and Services. And while there is still for sure some way to go to be really mainstream… You get already a lot out of the Services offered today!

Sure there is Skype (you can make free calls over the Internet and buy credits to make calls to normal land lines…) and now Gizmo. But many VoIP Service-Provider are coming up.

I even started to use different Provider depending on which country I am calling in.

A great and free prgram to combine different providers is x-Lite. I used it to connect two German (Web.de FreePhone & GMX NetPhone) and a US (Gizmo) provider. I was able to receive calls on my VoIP Phone number and make calls in both countries.

The big advantage is that you are able to dial 0800- (free call) and 0900- (toll call) numbers with some of these services not reachable through traditional land line calls from abroad! Additionally every service offers different prices for calls to different counties and you can make the cheapest call depending on where the call terminates.
I will add more to this topic as I work with these services.

Is Music distribution changing?

The music industry is still unsure if they should change anything in their business model or move into completely new territory.
This article in “FAST Company” with statements from the music industry is showing that there is some movement happening: Fast Talk: Sounds of the Future

And new music matching services are coming up and grow in usage: Last.FM or Pandora (Article in FAST Company: Algorhythm and Blues)

But until now mostly the only real change that we have seen remains the added copy protection to the music disc….. Or?

Your PC-TV: Yahoo! Go

Yahoo has launched a public beta of their new DVR-Music-Video-DPG Platform: Yahoo! Go. You get all the Content of Yahoo and more aggregated into a PC-Media Platform. The beta looks promising. You can even see what films are playing in a theater near you and watch previews. What else: share Photos, News etc.
But still I have the impression that we still speak of a PC not a TV with Internet…. What do you think? Is this the future?

Watch On-Demand and are we all getting Mini-TV-Producers?

Today, I came across this interesting article on AdAge.com: Should Local TV Embrace Consumer-Created Content?

It shows that there is (finally) something changing in the TV arena!
Added to the facts that we are able to buy TV contents at e.g. iTunes or watch the shows on the broadcasters Website. On their websites you can watch for free but have to see a (no-skip) commercial up-front… Will we ever get rid of the 30 sec. spots?

But until then we can enjoy all the little videos of all the people out there. If we want…

Cheers,
Marco

RSS Reader

From time to time I would like to present the different web tools I am using. Feedback very welcome! Today it’s time for: RSS-Feed Reader.

I have tested the RSS Reader bloglines.com for the past few days and do highly recommend it. I do use the reader to have all my RSS Feeds in view and I am able to read then anytime an Internet connection is at hand.

I run it along with the RSS Reader of Thunderbird. Until now bloglines.com wins. Due to higher flexibility and better integration to all the other nifty web tools. What do you use?

More tools do follow.

Cheers,
Marco
